Abstract
the system has three light sources (4) and detectors (7) mounted on a rigid reference frame (1). Beams of light (8) are reflected by mirrors (5) mounted on a movable carrier (6) rigidly connected to a probe (9). Carrier movement causes a light spot to move over the surface of each detector to measure two independent translational components, making six in all. A unique relationship exists between the position of the probe and the position and orientation of the carrier. Given the probe dimensions, the measuring point and hence the geometry of the test piece can be calculated.
