Abstract

Reduction of 6-nitroquinaldine and of 2-nitrophenanthrene was carried out with phosphine under conditions described by Bucklerl. Reduction of 6-nitroquinaldine yielded 3,9-dimethyldipyrido[3,2-a: 3',2' -h Jphenazine, pyridazino[ 4,3{: 5,6-f/Jbiquinaldine-3-oxide and 6,6' -azoquinaldine, while 2-nitrophenanthrene afforded only 2,2' -azoxyphenanthrene. Reduction of pyridazino[ 4,3-f: 5,6{'Jbiquinaldine-3-oxide with zinc dust and sodium hydroxide yielded 6,6' -diamino-5,5'-biquinaldyl, which was converted into 6,6' -di(acetyJamino)-5,5' -biquinaldyl. The structures were verified by spectrometry. Mass spectra of the new compounds are discussed.
