Abstract

A method of marking substrates and marked containers are disclosed. A method comprises the steps of applying and curing a coating composition comprising
(a) a matrix forming material comprising an inorganic ox ide or inorganic oxide precursor, and (b) an organic pore forming agent. The marking is provided by removing at least a portion of the organic pore forming agent in a selected location of the coating layer. The marking may be provided on a container with a product or heat-sensitive product inside. Additional embodiments relate to multilayer coatings and methods for forming multi-layer coatings.
