Abstract

Introducing a preregistered approach for gathering questionnaire data at scientific conferences, we examined primarily attitudes towards and practices of science communication amongst physicists employed at Dutch universities and research institutes. Tenure track physicists who participate frequently in science communication seem to be driven by strategic rationale more than by participating in a dialogue with society. Our results also link having a preference for communication platforms to different science communication approaches. One-way communication is instigated predominantly by physicists who consume science through traditional media (mass journalism, popular magazines), whereas strategic tactics correspond with expanding, relative new platforms (social media, podcasts).
