Abstract

Reducing the computational effort for the machine models remains a priority for machine designers. Therefore, the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) needs replacing with faster models in optimisation routines. Alternative semi-analytic models converge fast without significant computational effort. However, the machine geometry must be simplified, and linear or infinitely permeable iron should be assumed. For some machines, these assumptions are not admissible. A new method for analysis of electrical machines is Spectral Element Method (SEM) which allows modelling of non-square subdomain geometries and at the same time maintain the spectral accuracy . The resulting system of equations will be less compared to FEA. To illustrate, a Linear Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (LPMSM) geometry is modelled using SEM including the nonlinear material properties of the iron. The performance of the model is discussed and compared with FEA regarding absolute error and computational time.
