    Abstract

Chemical control is one of the possibilities for home sanitation for house-dust allergic patients. The causative mites may be found in mattress, padded furniture, curtains, carpets or on walls. Eight different control formulations are available in Europe : Acardust (aerosol), Acarosan (foam and wet powder), Artilin 3A (paint), liquid nitrogen, Paragerm AK (spray), Pirimiphos methyl (spray) and Tymasil (spray). Based on data supplied by the manufacturers and on published scientific reports, the authors review the safety (fire hazard, LD50 and LC50, irritation, sensibilisation, mutagenicity) efficacy in laboratory tests (speed in killing, reduction of population) and ease of use (length of treatment, necessity to use special equipment or protection measures) to aid the physician to make a choice from the available products. All niches possibly infested in the home may be treated effectively with one or more of the formulations currently on the market in Europe. However, the safety for man is only more or less known for only three products (Acarosan foam and wet powder, Tymasil). Efficacy under domestic conditions, safety of the formulated products and clinical results will be published separately.
