Abstract

The low-energy ion neutralization at Al and Pd alkali metal surfaces was investigated by studying their interaction with positive helium ions due to backscattering. Quantum theory was used to analyze the auger and resonant neutralization in the energy range from 100 ev to 3 keV. Interaction of the He-1s level with the metal-atom-core orbitals resulted in resonance. Auger neutralization was found to bemore dominant in Pd unlike Al where both were found to be equally operative.
