Abstract
The number of people suffering from dementia is estimated at around 24 million and will rise to 81 million at the year 2040. Behavioural (eg restlessness at night) and psychological symptoms mostly lead to the situation where people are no longer able to live in their own physical and social environment and become institutionalized. In different ways, lighting can have a positive influence on the behavior and well being of people with dementia and several guidelines are available. In this paper it will be shown that it is possible to create lighting for people with dementia that enhances the visual and the non-visual performance without creating an unpleasant atmosphere. This will be shown by a lighting design for a specific care home in The Netherlands.
