Abstract
Historic cities are subject of transformation aiming their development
all around the globe. The rehabilitation of Plaza Garibaldi is an
example which main objective is the one to revert the process of
decay in the public space of an emblematic historic district. Plaza
Garibaldi has a strong touristic potentiality due to its traditions based
on the public space dynamics. This paper analyses the urban
intervention according to the historic urban landscape approach. It
emphasizes the identification of local cultural resources as the main
challenges in the elaboration of urban interventions, especially, when
these do not correspond to global standards of development. The
purpose of this paper is to illustrate the importance of democratic
participation of local communities for elaborating interventions of
cultural significance. It also shows the validity of the HULA for the
safeguarding of the authenticity and local cultural diversity in historic
urban areas.
