Abstract

This study describes a DSS for retail planning that integrates models and solution strategies with a GIS-database. We use a new approach. referred to as the view-based approach, which aims to improve the flexibility and interactiveness of spatial DSS. Users can construct a model of a retail planning problem using as building blocks available methods for forecasting spatial search, spatial interaction/choice modelling performance analysis and performance evaluation. Through a set of active and linked views users can simulate alternative location strategics, anticipated market developments and possible goal specifications, whereby immediate feedback information can be obtained. The paper describes the basic fimctionality of the DSS and the way it can be used for retail planning.
