Abstract

The energy transition will impact various aspects of power systems. Power quality and, in particular, voltage dip can be named as aspects of power systems that are prone to a change due to the generation shift from fossil fuel-based synchronous generation to renewable energy sources (RES). This transition is foreseen to impact medium voltage (MV), high voltage (HV), and extra HV (EHV) grids. This paper investigates the impacts of the energy transition on voltage dips within the MV grids. The impacts of the requirements for generation (RfG) stipulated by the Dutch grid code and fast fault current injection (FFCI) capability for RES on voltage dips are investigated in this paper using a typical Dutch MV network model. The results show the limited capability of RES units to impact the residual voltage during voltage dips, even for high-RES penetration levels. However, these generation units will also partially support the network voltage during faults.
