Abstract

Technologies with free optimization parameters on subpixel level are needed for a better front-of-screen performance of the transflective LCD. For this purpose, thin wet coatable retarders that enable adjustment of the retardation values on subpixel level are developed. Isotropic domains are created in nematic retardation films by thermal patterning or photopatterning. Employing a patterned retarder in a transflective LCD, leads to an LCD with high reflectivity, high transmission, good contrast ratio at a low driving voltage, low chromaticity at all gray levels and wide viewing angles.
