Abstract

The remelting of pure cullet batches may have several advantages from a theoretical point of view. None or only low amounts of sodium sulfate are needed as a refining agent because there are no carbonates involved in the raw materials which release CO2 gas. Normally, this carbon dioxide has to be removed from the melt by a sulfate fining process. This means that only small quantities of SO2 gas are formed in the case of 100 percent cullet.
