Ghost industries: industrial water landscapes on the Willamette River in Oregon

Research output: Book/ReportReportAcademic

Abstract

What is the role of water in the conversion of former industrial areas? How is water used in engaging the public to experience these sites both as physical and cultural places? Can ecological design foster the coexistence of industry and environment?
Ghost industries. Industrial water landscapes on the Willamette River, Oregon addresses these core questions by examining the impact of the former Oregonian industry (1830-1940) on the Willamette River landscape and discussing how projects of transformation interpret the triangular interplay among industry, landscape and water. The book is arranged in two main sections:
Part 1- ‘Water as source and resource for transformation’ explains the different design approaches in the regeneration of four dismissed industrial sites dotting the Willamette River waterfront and debates the contribution of water to the sites transformation.
Part 2- ‘Design in practice: ‘Towards a new culture of design with water, industry and landscape’ offers several views on the contemporary role and the use of water in the transformation of industrial waterfronts through 5 interviews to well-known Oregonian practitioners and academics from the design field of architecture and landscape architecture.
This book is a source of suggestions and ideas for scholars, students and professionals in architecture, landscape architecture, planning and their related fields who want to manage the urban landscapes successfully.
