Abstract

This paper investigates the integration of quantum key distribution (QKD) and post-quantum cryptography (PQC) into software defined networks (SDNs) to maintain their security even against quantum computers which threaten practically all current cryptography. We discuss the relevance of securing SDNs, the threats and limitations of classical cryptography against upcoming quantum computing, and how QKD and PQC can be used for mitigating potential attacks featuring quantum computers on both SDN control and data planes. Finally, we propose an SDN architecture that allows for end-to-end quantum-safe communications.
