Abstract
Median conditions for an argon plasma in a magnetic field are defined and identified, electron and ion temperatures being 30 and 10000K respectively. Classical theoretical equations are developed for energy transfer for both ions and electrons in terms of temperatures, densities and the so-called Coulomb logarithm. A fraction `f' is defined as a ratio of ionic and transfer energies to the ionic energy, and values of this fraction obtained experimentally are plotted against the current strength over the range 20-125 A. Plasma stability characteristics are investigated by reference to the linear Vlasov theory and a plot of the ratio drift/thermal velocity to electron/ion temperature over ranges 0.01-0.10 and 2-20 respectively
