Abstract
This article describes the development of endogenous steroid abuse in addition to the development of the analytical techniques to determine these steroids. There is still an increasing number of steroids of endogenous origin being used as doping agents in sports. During the eighties of the last century, mainly testosteron was used. At present, precursors of testosteron such as dehydroepiandrosterone and androst-4-ene-3,17-dione are encountered, in addition to several 19-nosteroids. Methods to detect these endogenous steroids in urine have evolved simultaneously to the development of steroid abuse. Formerly, the use of testosterone was detected by means of the testosterone/epitestosterone (T/E) ratio. At present, more complicated analytical techniques such as isotope ratio mass spectrometry are applied.
