    Abstract

The production of polymers is shifting from solvent-based systems toward water-based systems. A versatile technique to produce polymer nanoparticles in an aqueous system is emulsion polymerization. Different aspects described in this article are the general mechanism of emulsion polymerization, ingredients in the recipes, emulsion copolymerization and composition drift, process strategies, development of particle morphologies, reactor setups and industrial-scale operation aspects of mixing and heat transfer, and finally the main applications of latices.
