Abstract

Traditionally grounding had to divert lightning currents, and had to provide safety for personnel. At present grounding is increasingly required to also safeguard sensitive electronic instrumentation. To meet this new additional requirement we have to reconsider the fundamental nature of grounding. As a result we criticize ‘ideal’ and ‘clean’ grounds, the special role of Mother Earth and single-point grounding. The positive outcome is that it has become clear how to design a grounding system with a high level of protection.
