    Abstract

Due to the high dimerization const. of ureidopyrimidinone (UPy), mols. contg. two such units form large polymeric aggregates, which are in equil. with cyclic species. We have investigated the dynamics of exchange in solns. of bifunctional compds. 1 and 2, using EXSY 2D-NMR and size exclusion chromatog. (SEC). Exchange spectroscopy on mixed linear aggregates of 1a and 1b shows that the kinetics of exchange between assocd. UPy units is different from that in monofunctional compds., and takes place via a long-lived intermediate. Simulation of size-exclusion chromatograms of compds. 2 show that exchange of mols. between cyclic dimers is fast on the chromatog. timescale, although it is slow on the NMR timescale.
