Abstract
The paper presents a model of a Cheng cycle cogeneration unit. The intended use of the model is in a model predictive control system. The unit model is composed of submodels for each main component. Two approaches are used to derive the submodels: black-box modeling, using experimental data taken from an industrial scale Cheng cycle cogeneration unit operating in closed loop in a cardboard production plant; and white-box modeling, based on fundamental principles like conservation laws and on constitutive equations. Both types of submodels are validated against the available data and then combined to a single "gray-box" model, almost covering the complete cogeneration unit. Reasonable agreement exists between (sub)models and experimental data, suggesting the gross correctness of the model and its submodels
