Abstract

Medical professionals and architects are increasingly realizing the importance of creating ‘healing environments’ that address the totality of patient and staff needs. This is driven by the recognition that the physical environment in a hospital can affect the patient’s sense of well-being and with this, potentially, health. This paper shows how the advent of LED technology and new advances in the understanding of the "Non Image Forming" (NIF) or biological effects of light are applied in dynamic – coloured and white – lighting solutions. These concepts can be utilized in typical hospital areas, such as scanning rooms, patient rooms and staff rooms, to address visual, emotional and biological effects of lighting to create environments that take into consideration the well-being of all hospital users.
