Abstract
The catatlytic effect of a promising manganese complex (MnMeTACN) on the oxidative drying of water-borne alkyd paints was demonstrated. Drying of ethly linoleate (EL) as a model compound in emulsion, a short oil alkyd emulsion, and an alkyd emulsion-based paint was studied with regard to the evolution of hydroperoxides, the variation of double bonds, and film properties. These results showed that MnMeTACN could effectively catalyse the oxidation of alkyds. MnMeTACN appeared to be a much more effective catalyst than a commercially available Mn-based catalyst, and showed comparable catalytic activities with a commercially available Co-catalyst.
