Abstract

A diffusion reaction between titanium and aluminium oxide was examined at 900°C and 1100°C under vacuum. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were made by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), light microscopy (LM) , scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA). The reaction products were identified as TiAI(O), Ti3AI(O) and Ti(AI,O) in infinite diffusion couples. Ti3AI(O) and Ti2O were found in a finite diffusion couple. Tio was never observed. A maximum oxygen solubility of 7 to 8 atomic per cent in the Ti3AI alloy was found by a thin film analysis and an independent mass balance calculation. The phase equilibria study showed Al203 to be in equilibrium with TiAl, Ti3AI, Ti2O and TiO.
