Developments in ferrite ceramics with strong piezomagnetic coupling

Abstract

The efficiency of non-conducting ferrite transducers has long been known to exceed the efficiency of laminated metallic transducers. On the other hand the stronger piezomagnetic coupling of some alloys has permitted operation over a wider frequency band. Recently, however, low-porosity ferrites with exceptionally strong piezomagnetic coupling have been developed. The authors describe the 15 years' development of piezomagnetic ferrites and discuss the chemical variations and technological methods that have resulted in high-coupling ferrites for wideband acoustic communications and industrial ultrasonics.
