Abstract
It is important to emphasize that the urban and transportation environment is uncertain and non- stationary. Therefore, a dynamic agent-based model will be developed where each individual is represented as an agent. The model will simulate the daily activity-travel patterns of individuals. As part of this overall model, the focus of this simulation will be on how individuals learn and forget routes and locations over time, and also how they gain spatial knowledge for different urban morphologies. In addition, it will illustrate how individuals update their mental maps. The overall goal of the research is to have a better understanding of how individuals’ spatial cognition and mental representation of urban networks develop over time and to explore the impacts of landmarks, information and communication technologies (ICT’s) and social learning on spatial cognition. The purpose of this paper is to describe the key mechanisms of a dynamic network model for daily activity-travel patterns and how the cognitive learning mechanism of this model works.
