Abstract

By introducing the flexible AC/DC-link (FDCL) into the MV-grid, it is expected that its installation will not only bring a gain in capacity to the link, thus avoiding conventional reinforcement, but will also give better controllability and provide ancillary services for the distribution network operator (DNO). The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of a different configuration of the VSC DC-link in relation to the gain of capacity through DC links as well as conductor losses. A methodology of calculation is proposed to calculate the gain of capacity and conductor losses through different circuits, cables, configuration and types of connections. This indicates that there is a possibility of obtaining a maximum gain of capacity and fewer conductor losses depending on the type of DC links' configuration employed.
