Abstract

The effect of different start-up procedures on the deactivation of a 5% Pt/C catalyst used for the oxidation of -gluconate has been investigated. Results have been obtained both in a stirred tank reactor for batch experiments and in an apparatus for continuous oxidation processes. The deactivation of the catalyst is not explicable by formation of platinum oxides. A model is proposed for the deactivation of platinum catalysts by oxygen, based on penetration of oxygen atoms into the platinum lattice.
