Abstract
In this article we describe logistics management as seen from a government perspective.
We make some ‘clever remarks’, aimed at logistic policy analysis. We introduce four
topics. Firstly we argue that it is necessary for the central government to formulate a
logistics policy in order to be able to make an integral transport policy. Secondly, we
introduce the ‘logistic family-concept’. A logistic family is a group of products sharing
similar product and market characteristics, underlying similar logistics decision making. It is
a method aimed at logistic segmentation. Thirdly, we describe the SPITS-model, an updated
version of the PIT-model. The SPITS-model is a representation of the components of the
logistic system. Fourthly, we present a method for analysing the influence of dynamic forces
on logistic structures, using both the logistic family-concept and the SPITS-model.
