Abstract
Inquiries in the Netherlands showed that the noise from neighbours in dwellings has
become the highest cause of annoyance. Especially the noise caused by the use of toilets gives lots of complaints. A toilet produces both airborne and structureborn sound. The latter is transported more easily to adjacent dwellings. One way to characterize the source strength of a toilet for structureborn sound is by means of the equivalent force, determined by the plate method. A concrete slab has been constructed for that purpose mainly for the frequency range above 125 Hz. In this way the equivalent force of different
aspects of the use of toilets has been determined: the use, the flushing and the filling of the reservoir. Also the effect of the mounting of the toilet on the concrete slab has been investigated. Prediction of toilet noise on these data might be possible but has not been done yet in practice.
