Abstract

Using the sum rules for magnetic X-ray dichroism we obtain trends for the spin—orbit interaction and the z-components of the orbital magnetic moments of Co in Co/Pd multilayers with perpendicular easy axis of magnetization. We found a correlation between the spin magnetic dipole term Tz', which is related to the spin—orbit interaction, and the crystal-field. This is the first experimental evidence that the origin of the perpendicular easy axis of the magnetization in magnetic layers is determined by a fine interplay between the crystal-field and spin—orbit coupling
