Abstract

Oscillating systems are very common in, for example, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and many other fields. An intriguing phenomenon occurring in these systems is that two (or more) oscillating systems may synchronize, i.e. their rhythms are adjusted to a certain pattern. This work focuses on the synchronization problem of two chaotic oscillators with Huygens’ coupling. A simplified version of Huygens’ system of pendulum clocks is considered, where the clocks have been replaced by two chaotic oscillators. Two well known oscillators are used in the analysis, namely Duffing and van der Pol oscillators. The occurrence of synchronization in the oscillators is validated by means of experiments.
