Abstract

This contribution gives a description of numerical models constructed with the PLASIMO toolkit and aiming to describe the plasmas in HID lamps. Apart fot the simple HID lamps based on pure Hg, we have also constructed models for Metal Halide lamps that apart form Hg contains small additives of NaI of Dyl3. The models combine fluid descriptions with modules that deal with the generation and transport of radiation. The input of a model is the set of control parameters, such as the fill chemistry, driving power and vessel shape. The output is formed by plasma properties; such as the voltage over the lamp and the production of heat and radiation. The models were validated by comparing the results with those of experiments on earth, in the international space station and in a centrifuge. Several experimental techniques have been applied.
