Abstract
The paper discusses the use of symbolic and numeric computation, and a suitable combination of it, in the analysis and design of nonlinear control systems. It argues that such a combination is necessary to fully exploit the capabilities of both types of computation. This is illustrated by two examples. The first example shows the complexity of the algorithm for the symbolic computation of the zero dynamics. It appears that the computation becomes troublesome even for models of moderate order. The second example is related to the computation of the stability of the zero dynamics of a nonlinear system. This problem is hard to solve symbolically, so a partial numeric approach is advised
