Component characterization for BOTDR integrated circuit

In recent years, the interest in the monitoring of large-scale structures has significantly increased. Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (BOTDR) systems allow for distributed measurements of strain and temperature variation along optical fibers. However, the high cost has limited the use of these sensing systems. We designed a potentially low-cost BOTDR readout unit whose optical functionalities have been integrated in a Multi Project Wafer Run (MPWR) circuit. Here we report the first measurement results concerning the integrated optical components. Performance of the passive circuit is good, whilst a second design has been made to improve laser power and switching voltage.
