Hard-wear resistent coatings prepared by CVD are sometimes limited in their applications because of poor corrosion and oxidation resistance. CVD applied chromium carbide is shown to have good oxidation resistance as compared to TiC and TiN CVD coatings. The oxidation rate of chromium carbide was found to be at least a factor 10 lower than the oxidation rate of TiN under the applied test conditions.
