Abstract

In this paper the essential oil of Coleus amboinicus Lour. from Vietnam and Kampuchea is isolated by steam-distilation. Leaves of Coleus amboinicus Lour. from Vietnam yield 0.002 - 0.003% of essential oil but the yield from Kampuchea is higher (0.03%). The values of the determined physical constants are n~ = 1."2346; d~ = 0.9697 (or Vietnamese sample and ni; = ,tl.42351; d~~ = 0.9700 for Kampuchea's. Chemical composition of the oil is also discussed. Over 35 components are separated by means of Capillary Gas Chromatography (CGC) and GC/MS among which more than 20 compounds are identified. Coleus amboinicus Lour. is a traditional medicinal plant in Vietnam and Kampuchea for the treatment of influenza, coughs. etc. and it is used also as a spice.
