Abstract

Green energy initiatives are resulting in a large integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) into low voltage (LV) distribution grids. Integration of large DERs is a challenging task due to the limited hosting capacity of LV grids and very high grid reinforcement cost. This paper aims to present technical challenges that DSO's will encounter in the near future while integrating DERs into LV grids and possible solutions that would make this integration feasible for future LV distribution grids in the Netherlands. Further, barriers have been identified that are hampering the implementation of technical solutions. In the UNITED-GRID project, pathways are developed to support DSO's in the transition from the passive distribution grids of today to the active and intelligent distribution grids of tomorrow are presented. The large integration of DERs in the LV grid introduces voltage issues, phase imbalances, transient power quality issues due to their intermittency. With high penetration of RES into LV distribution grids and electrification of energy demand, congestion problems might be faced.
