Abstract

ß'-sialon has been produced by carbothermal route from the mixture of nanosized alumina and silica prepared in the form of slip casted tablets. Quantitative X-ray analysis has been applied to determine phases occuring at the different time and temperature in flowing nitrogen. It has been found that apart from silicon carbide, O'-phase occurred as an intermediate in the carbotherrnal reaction in flowing nitrogen. The lack of silicon in the system because of evaporation of SiO led to further decomposition of ß'-sialon in the presence of AlN.
