Abstract

In the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is the natural need to know more about the SARS-CoV-2, also called corona virus and how it develops. Ideally, we would like to look into the future and anticipate on that basis
to mitigate consequences. For decades, we are using building performance simulation models to assess the energy needs of a building design. Thus
we can often also say something about, for example, the thermal
comfort, among other things in the event of overheating. We also use the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique to control the air flow in rooms and around buildings and analyze, for example, the ventilation efficiency. However, when it comes to ventilation and health little information is available with respect to modeling. Ventilation, the flow rate, normally is a boundary condition and not part of the analysis of a design solution, unless it is complete
naturally ventilated buildings. In practice, such buildings are seldom designed and built. But if it involves infections in which airborne transmission is important, ventilation is crucial and depends on, for example, the
use of a space and the risk than one wishes to accept. Building code requirements or requirements as available in the PoR for
Offices or Schools may not necessarily be sufficient. How are we going to
deal with this? In this article we want to give a short description
of the model often used for this purpose, which is also
included in a web tool (eerstehulpbijventilatie.nl) that recently
has come online to get started yourself.
