Abstract
The file contains a calculation models to behind the recommendations offered in the BRYS thermostat concept. Further information about BRYS can be found on www.lennekekuijer.orgbrys-en. The primary goal of the calculation models is to assist in preventing overheating in homes by optimizing the use of shading devices and natural ventilation strategies. The models leverage weather data and building-specific parameters to provide actionable recommendations for maintaining thermal comfort, while also aiming to maintain low-tech.
The dashboard enables users to load historical or live weather data to evaluate cooling strategies, providing dynamic and responsive recommendations for managing indoor thermal comfort. The results, presented through the Excel model dashboard, include input parameters, assessment limits, and visualizations of predicted solar radiation and ventilation scenarios. Example outcomes for sunny and cloudy days illustrate the model’s effectiveness in guiding shading and ventilation decisions, showcasing its ability to optimize indoor climate control under varying weather conditions.
The reasoning behind the design of the dashboard is explained in a supplementary report Bader, Vera; Roel Loonen and Lenneke Kuijer (2025) BRYS: Calculation Models for Solar Shading and Purge Ventilation. A Study on the Development and Application of Simplified Models Using Weather Data to Aid Occupants in using Solar Shading and Purge Ventilation. Available on said website.
