Abstract

The prepn. of block copolymer micelles in hydrophobic (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) and hydrophilic (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluromethanesulfonate) ionic liqs. is discussed. For this purpose two different block copolymer systems were investigated: a poly(styrene-block-Me methacrylate) diblock copolymer and a poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline-block-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline-block-2-nonyl-2-oxazoline) triblock copolymer. Due to the poor soly. of the styrenic and 2-nonyl-2-oxazoline blocks in the utilized ionic liqs., the investigated block copolymer systems self-assemble into spherical micelles of the order of 20 nm in diam. as revealed by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy.
