Abstract

The article summarizes work of a Ph.D. thesis defended at the Eindhoven University of Technology. It describes research of the preparation and properties of a'-sialons and a'-ß'composite materials. X-ray diffraction and dilatometry were used to investigate the reaction sequence and densification under nitrogen pressures up to 100 bar and temperatures up to 1900°C. Hardness and bendingstrength were measured as a function of composition and microstructure.
