Abstract

Artificial magnetic conductors (AMCs) received a lot of attention for Antenna-on-Chip applications. Typically, these structures suffer from severe dielectric losses. These losses can be separated in two mechanisms; losses due to the propagation through a lossy medium, and losses due to the fringe fields coupling into the silicon. It is shown that a theoretical minimum dielectric loss can be defined, and using intuitive measures, an AMC can be constructed which approaches this theoretical limit.
