Abstract
This report presents the first year-advanced report of nS application in concrete focusing on the actual state of the art. A literature review was performed and reported. State of the art review included the nS application in concrete, type and concentration of superplasticizer and grading optimization models to render it suitable to be applicable in concrete. Also the nS production process, effects caused by the addition of nS and the application in concrete were established. Properties of commercial nano-silica (nS) and micro-silica (mS) samples were determined. This characterization involves the physical properties and the results of the water demand, grading analysis, and workability tests on mortar scale (cement paste with nano-silica addition).
The aim of these activities was to establish the main characteristics of nano-silica and to select the best particle size range and concentration in order to continue with the subsequent tests as reported in the project plan. Some general conclusions and recommendations have been drawn from the first results. Considering the conclusions and recommendations of the first year, a further research and experimental setup was planned.
