Abstract
In the APPEAL (A Pleasant Personal Environment for Adaptive Learning) project, an architecture, methods and tools are being developed for the design of highly interactive and adaptive computer-based training systems. The first results of this research have been implemented in the APPEAL prototype system for learning Dutch as a second language. The system is also used as a research platform for running user experiments. The usability of multimedia in interactive learning systems is evaluated. A technical specification of APPEAL in the context of distance education, called Tele-APPEAL, is also presented.
