Analysis of the Jortner-Stepanov theory of radiationless transitions in organic molecules

    Abstract

    A treatment of the theory of radiationless processes in mols. is given using the Jortner-Stepanov model. This model can be solved exactly. showing the precise conditions under which the statistical limit is valid. It appears that irreversibility occurs only when one deals with an exact continuum, but otherwise oscillations in the time dependence remain. In this case a radiationless transition can only occur when collisions with other mols. are present within the period of oscillation (recurrence time). Then a detailed presentation of the time dependence of two states which can be excited and are connected with one another by a quasi-continuum is given
