Abstract
We discus a nonlinear polarisation switch driven by ultrafast gain and index dynamics in a semiconductor optical amplifier. This polarisation switch is operated by sub-picosecond optical pulses and acts as a building block for a passively modelocked ringlaser. Finally, we discus an optical memory based on two coupled actively mode-locked ringlasers.
