Abstract
A new formula for the rate of photochemical dissociation is presented within the Bixon-Jortner model of radiationless transitions in large organic molecules. The essence of this formula is that if the rate of photochemical decomposition is much larger than the rate of radiative decay the details of the decomposition process become unimportant. However, those details are important if the rate of photochemical decomposition is small compared with the rate of radiative decay
