Abstract

The authors develop a framework for production control and materials management which reflects the complex nature of the subject. The framework is hierarchical and is directed towards the definitions of decision functions which can be allocated to organizational positions and responsibility areas. The main distinctions are between production unit control on the one hand and goods flow control on the other hand. Moreover the framework incorporates both the detailed item-oriented and aggregate capacity-oriented aspects of production control. Also the coordination between marketing and sales on the one hand, and production control and materials management, on the other hand, is part of the framework
